Emily Bett Rickards clarifies her comments about not wanting an "Olicity baby" in Arrow Season 7. Emily Bett Rickards Clarifies “Olicity Baby” Comments

Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity) was recently interviewed by the Daily Hive and she was asked about her recent comments about not wanting an “Olicity baby” (a child for Oliver and Felicity) in Arrow Season 7.

“I did say that, and I regretted saying that right afterwards because I got some hate,” Emily said, clarifying her statement. “I said that just because I didn’t want her to revolve around just being in this relationship. That’s why.”

Before addressing the baby thing, Emily talked about how social media can be “super, super weird.”

“I’m so grateful for the fandom, and everyone’s usually very, very nice, and I’m not afraid of opinions. Have your own opinion about TV, movies, art in any way, you know, whatever you want, but seeing pictures of my body edited to pregnant, that’s where the line is drawn for me. I can’t do that anymore. So I don’t scroll too deep,” she said.

You can watch the interview below, where Emily talks about a lot of cool other things, including what it was like to go from a one-day role to being a major part of the Arrow series.

I think the “hate” she received was probably because some of the fandom are mothers themselves and they don’t like the implication that being simply a mom is a bad thing? It’s a egg-shell world out there. But I completely 100% agree with her. I want more for Felicity than the Olicity relationship. Though them having a baby is fine with me if they can balance it all.

But I don’t blame her drawing a line to be honest. I find those kinds of manips quite creepy so it must be unsettling to see yourself edited to look pregnant.

I’m not so sure. I feel like a lot of the fans doing these things are younger and want this to happen because the only thing that matters to them in the series is Olicity, and a baby would stick it to the “comic f—boys” as they call us. When really, I know from my own perspective, I don’t want an Olicity baby for the same reason Emily thinks that way: It makes it more about the relationship than about Felicity.

I want to see how Felicity takes a leadership role when Oliver is in prison. I want to see her finally build Smoak Technologies. She is still a “mother” and will have to be there for William.

If they want to have a baby in a flashforward when the show is all said and done, go for it.

I can’t speak for those people as I’m not one of them. I know Olicity fans are an eclectic mix of all ages and thinking a lot of fans are younger is probably inaccurate? But I did see some fandom who are mothers upset by what Emily said for the reasons I stated above but they didn’t send hate, simply expressed disappointment which is fair enough.
I think it completely depends on how it was handled. There is the worry they’d make it all about the baby and being a mother and remove her from the “action” but then it’s possible they could balance it all. Felicity is still a mother but a baby is a new and different experience I’d like both Oliver and Felicity to have at some point. But if they did it at the end of the series or as a flashforward, that would also be fine with me. It’s not something I’m desperate for at all. I want everything for Felicity that you have stated so that’s more important right now. Also, I don’t think the baby is even happening because filming with one would be a nightmare. I can’t imagine CW would allow it.

Totally agree with you about the baby! She has much to show yet, before having a baby, after all she is already a mother, assumed William

No. The hate she got was because her “fans” want an olicity baby and they don’t like her disagreeing with them. She wasn’t saying being a mom isn’t a good thing, she’s saying Felicity should have more of a storyline than just having a baby for the fandom to drool over.

Such a great interview with Emily, she’s so insightful and interesting – I think it’s super impressive she’s taken her hiatus and done Reborning in it, talk about commitment.

I’d like for Oliver and Felicity to have a baby one day because they’ve been through so much and the characters deserve happiness and to grow their family. I don’t necessarily need it immediately however – the Smoak Tech storyline is long long overdue. That said, if they do decide to do a baby storyline I don’t see that as a storyline that’s only about her relationship, it could also be a good storyline for felicity. It’s not like we see baby JJ or even William every episode, so we wouldn’t have to see the baby that often either.

Also, she’s totally right about the pregnancy manips. They’re totally creepy.

How sad that her fans turn on her the moment she doesn’t agree with them.

That’s the oliciters for you. The second someone says something that they disagree with they lose their damn minds

LOL at people thinking all her fans “turned on her.” There was only a select few and many fans of different characters have expressed their opinions on what most of these actors and actresses have said. Most of her fans want a storyline for Felicity. People don’t want the storyline of Oliver and Felicity having a baby just to “stick it to the comic fanboys.” Most of what I read they want that because as a married couple they deserve to have happiness. Also most of what I’ve read these fans are willing for it to happen at the end of the series because sometimes kids can be a hindrance on shows if not done right.

People think her fans “turned on her” because she got enough “Hate” (her word) to make her regret expressing her own opinion. The only people I’ve heard calling for an Olicity baby at all are hard core Olicity shippers, and while that definitely isn’t her entire fanbase it’s a large portion of it. Not to mention if only like 20 people sent her hate, she wouldn’t have noticed it within the 100’s of pro-Felicity tweets. It must have been a fairly large percentage of fans. Or at least of prominent fans that she’s used to getting praise from (i.e. the “turning”). Why else would she feel harassed enough to mention it in an interview?
