The CW’s Green Arrow Pilot “Arrow” – Character Details (Spoilers!)

Craig Byrne January 23, 2012 41

And now some of the mysteries are solved!

Via casting breakdowns, GreenArrowTV has learned a little bit about some of the characters we’ll be seeing in The CW’s pilot Arrow.

Here are some of the characters we have to look forward to (subject to change):

Disclaimer: It is not the intention of GreenArrowTV to ruin any secrecy regarding this project, but instead to get people excited and interested in more. In other words, DC or WB – hopefully this a good thing rather than a nuisance, although if there is a takedown request, please contact us and it will be respected.

Oliver Queen – It’s pretty obvious this would be the name of the main character, right? It sounds like he was believed dead for a few years before making a return home.

At some point Oliver is kidnapped and cuffed to a chair but gets himself loose.

The Arrow wears a green body armor that is “so dark it’s virtually black.” He has a bow and arrow, of course. He may have a mask covering the lower half of his face, distorting his voice. The costume also has a hood.

It sounds like this version of Oliver Queen is at least 25, and he is written very much like the Green Arrow was in his better Smallville appearances.

It also seems that we will see flashbacks to his time on the island and how he got there, and what led him to becoming a good guy.

Dinah “Laurel” Lance – Dinah’s using her middle name here. She and Oliver have not seen each other in five years, before his return to the city. “Laurel” went to law school. It doesn’t appear that she is the Black Canary (yet). She works with a firm called the City Necessary Resources Initiative.

Tommy was Oliver’s best friend before he disappeared for several years. He sounds like a bit of a frat boy. He notices Oliver has changed a lot in his years away. The character himself might have a tie to a Green Arrow foe from the comics. Tommy tells Oliver about what his funeral was like a few years earlier.

Sara – Back on the boat, Oliver had a history with a character named Sara, and that history may be the reason Laurel is not happy to see him when he returns to town. In fact, she’s downright angry.

Thea – A young relative of Oliver’s, around 18. He teasingly calls her “Speedy.”

Moira Queen – Oliver’s mom is still alive as of the pilot, but his father was killed on the boat, in the incident that originally sent Oliver to the island. In the years since, she has remarried a man named Walter who doesn’t understand Oliver’s sudden interest in the company, Queen Consolidated.

The city seems to be called “Starling City” rather than “Star City.”

DC Comics shoutouts include a “Mr. Grell” and “Danielle DiDio.” There’s also a bank account numbered 52.

How does it sound, so far?

Very, very good!

Dinah working for a group called CNRI? Hmm…
    .
Have to give the rest a view first. Sounds like a fair starting point, though.

If this is legit, I don’t understand why there are so many unnecessary changes to the mythology. Why call Dinah by her middle name? Why try to give Ollie’s parents a larger role?

Whatever, as a fan I’ll give this a shot, but if it’s just going to be the Smallville version of the character, count me out.

I agree everything sounds great but why not star city instead. All in all I look forward to watching the pilot if it’s anything like the legendary Smallville count me in!

The casting notes make this sound like a typical CW teen/young adult drama, with the exception of the part about Oliver’s mother. That storyline could potentially have some “Hamlet” like undertones that could be interesting. Or it could just be played for cheap melodrama.

They need to give the show a more mature feel, honestly I don’t want this show to be just exactly like Smallville, it would be silly.

Sorry, but I’ve been a huge Superman fan my whole life, which was why I watched Smallville. If it isn’t a spinoff of Smallville with a chance to see some Smallville characters… I have no interest. And I’m sure the dozens of other Smallville fans I know, whom I personally introduced to Smallville, won’t be interested either. I’ll give the first episode 1 chance to get me interested. Just being honest.

Darknight, Smallville had a longer run than most shows… and there’s little to no chance we’d ever see Tom Welling as Clark Kent ever again anyway. So why make a connection if people will want it?

It’d be the same disappointment we felt when Smallville never gave us Bruce Wayne… times 1000. Why tease us with something that we can’t have? I’m glad they’re doing something new.

It doesn’t sound good at all. I don’t like the way they messed with the story =( Startling City? What’s thisAlthough it may have something with owner’s rights,so..
I guess Sara is the prototype of Tess from Smallville, yeah?
I think I give it a try, but it still will be weird. ‘Cos I like the Smallville storyline of GA and for me it’s kinda canon :)

I have to admit I’m largely unfamiliar with the comics version of Green Arrow. My exposure to the character is largely through Smallville and Justice League Unlimited. So if they come in and “mess with the story”, I probably won’t even notice. But I definitely want this series to work, and am anxiously wait for it’s debut.

One thing I will say, however, is the one thing Justin Hartely lacked (physically) for the character of Green Arrow (which I’ve seen in every picture from the comics and multiple animated series) is a mustache and goatee/beard. I hope to see that in this series.

Still, it’d be fun to see Justin back in the role, although that would probably be too confusing for most viewers. I also think it would be fun to have Kin Shriner have a role somewhere (he did the voice of GA in JLU).

      Thanks for the link!
Whilst I’m not bothered about the hillarkey about Chloe and oliver from Smallville I would prefer they get this right instead of another mess on the level of the Wonder Woman pilot!
The information as it stands could be okay if dealt with properly but even the early years of smallville were quite bad not as bad as later seasons until they started looking at their version of the justice league and the JSA with the episode “Combat” being the best from prior to that! They have big boots to fill and we aren’t as obliging as those that stuck with Smallville through the bad years…

I’ve been a huge fan of Green Arrow since I first picked up his Year One storyline some years ago, I really hope they stick close with the island orientated stuff that happened in Year One and corporate it into the show. Everything sounds great to me so far though! Can’t wait to see who they cast as Ollie. Hope they get someone decent.

I’ll be frequenting this site. :)

Oh, come on. I am so baffled as to why the CW is taking this character that they have already clearly established and made popular in Smallville and redoing him a year later. Seriously? Pick a different hero. Don’t take one that people are already in love with and rewrite him.

I just don’t see why they can’t make it a Smallville spin off. I know that the show ran 10 years and they mythology is already so deep, but I think they could keep going with it, especially if they focused on Arrow. Make it take place later. Make it take place before he ever came to Smallville even.

    • hopeless January 27, 2012 at 12:58 am - Reply

Its a popular character and has more chance of getting further as long as they don’t mess up the origin like they did with Aquaman and Wonder Woman although in that case it was just the pilot that was awful with AC it was simply they chose the wrong storyline and could have passed if they had someone at least conversant with the character and more importantly how to treat the character properly…
They have a writer of green lantern hopefully one of the animated ones so we could actually expect anything good from this.
So cross your fingers and wish for the best series you can ever hope for, well other than classic doctor who of course!

Smallville is and always will be my favorite TV show. I didn’t really like Superman at all before Smallville came out, but I got more and more interested the longer the show ran. I think it will be weird to see a new Green Arrow, and the people who loved Justin as the character will be making comparisons at first. However I am really excited for this show to start filming and with Green Arrow not being all that well known they can be creative with it. I was excited when there were talks of Robin getting his own show a few years ago called “Grayson” but I’m just happy DC Comics are coming out with the tv shows, they by far have the best characters!

i hope they use the same suit as in smallville that suit was really awesome

  19. hopeless January 30, 2012 at 12:24 am - Reply

I believe the problem with the Graysons is the same we’re seeing here, those in charge want to make their mark but have no idea whether their changes are really that good.
Keeping a little closer to the original would make alot more sense but we have no idea what limits have been imposed on themselves or whether we’re looking at another wonder woman fiasco!

    • Craig Byrne January 30, 2012 at 8:50 am - Reply

There isn’t really an “original” to fall back on, and no version of the Green Arrow story has featured the exact same characters.

The Green Arrow introduced in the Golden Age is different from the origin that Jack Kirby did in the late 1950′s, which is different than how Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams reinvented him in the 1960′s. Mike Grell told his own version of the story in the late 80′s/early 90′s and Andy Diggle told a fantastic story that was very different from what we’ve seen before with Green Arrow: Year One.

And then there’s Smallville’s Green Arrow, which took major liberties (parents killed by Lex Luthor’s parents, ended up married to Chloe Sullivan, sort-of founder of the Justice League) and the “New 52″ Green Arrow who is kind of unremarkable.

If Green Arrow were by-the-book based on any individual comics, it would probably be boring because there’d be no one for him to interact with! The Aquaman pilot had the same situation and people generally seemed to like that.

Or go to Smallville itself – if it was “just like the comics,” you could say goodbye to Lionel or Chloe, and depending on the version of the story, Clark’s parents too.

I have confidence that these writers know what they’re doing. “Starling City” is a head-scratcher, but beyond? It seems there is a plan, and that plan is a good TV show.

    • Craig Byrne January 30, 2012 at 8:51 am - Reply

With The Graysons I kept hoping cooler minds would prevail and it would morph into either a Robin show, a Tim Drake show, or a Nightwing show. Dick Grayson just isn’t interesting until his parents are killed, morbid as that sounds.

      • hopeless January 31, 2012 at 12:06 am - Reply

I kept hoping they’d start off after that event with him trying to develop his own identity somewhere between Robin and Nightwing.
Maybe throw in Robin III or perhaps have him fight against the Red Hood (ex-Robin II) unaware he’s his ex-replacement who is trying to regain his place by defeating his predecessor but to do so he becomes the villain as seen when he goes up against the Batman.
Would love a sequence where he meets up with Barbara and they have a variation of the Birds of Prey setting so its different actresses but its close enough to make it look like the new series version of the Birds of Prey so Nightwing can get some backup but not as overpowering as the JSA.
Darn why did i get that idea in my head now!!!

  20. hopeless January 31, 2012 at 12:07 am - Reply

By that I mean he needs to beat Nightwing before he thinks he’s ready to face his former mentor.

  21. hopeless January 31, 2012 at 12:09 am - Reply

So the series starts off with Dinah before she became a crimefighter?
Green Arrow is just starting too and I wonder how they will explain where he gets his gear if he doesn’t have the means to hide his identity from his own family?

  22. Robby February 2, 2012 at 11:19 am - Reply

there botching the entire story STARLING CITY c’mon I don’t know much about green arrow but I do know it is called STAR CITY when ever someone comes along a chages thing to the original story its going to be a flop I don’t want that

    • Craig Byrne February 3, 2012 at 2:54 pm - Reply

Robby, the “original story” would be awfully boring as a TV show, considering it was written in 1940 and I don’t think Green Arrow even had an origin until the late 50′s. But if you want Green Arrow to wear a feather in his cap, wear red gloves, and to have a boxing glove arrow, that’s okay for you I guess.

Hmm we know someone killed his father and left Olly for dead so perhaps hint there’s a link with dear old mum but its red herring since he’s just starting have him confront the truth behind big business with some of his father’s dark secrets coming to light and eventually realising what happened to his father had nothing to do with his business and trying to cope with being the heir and being a hero conflicts with the responsiblities involved especially as he has a sister to worry about too. Perhaps set up his future nemesis by having him be blamed for the death of a former friend’s parent and that person evolving into the villain he will be and maybe even revealing his mentor is interested in training Green Arrow as he realises he’s a more worthy apprentice.

I’m wondering if the 1st season premier will include Tess Mercer with Oliver, and will Lionel Luthor be mentioned since he is tied to the death of Oliver Queen’s father as shown in Smallville.

    • Craig Byrne February 14, 2012 at 11:56 am - Reply

No, Veritas, Lionel Luthor, and Tess Mercer were all created for Smallville and are not part of the Oliver Queen/Green Arrow canon. This is a new story.

  25. Cliff February 13, 2012 at 3:18 am - Reply

Will the secret society of Veritas be even mentioned in association to Oliver’s dad being killed?

Overall it sounds interesting. I am irritated by unnecessary changes like calling Dinah “Laurel” and Star City sounds better than Starling City.
I understand the need for new characters, but I’d think Roy would be an obvious choice for a supporting character.

    • Craig Byrne April 8, 2012 at 11:16 am - Reply

I still wouldn’t be shocked if we see Roy, perhaps as a boyfriend to Thea, at some point.

This wont be anything like smallville nor will see any of the smallville characters in it. The guy playing Green Arrow is not Justin Hartley. Green Arrow isnt the most popular hero in the dc universe compared to Superman, Batman, and Wonder woman all who had successful movies and wonder woman.
I being a fan of Superman, i am also a fan of Batman. If you didnt know, Green Arrow is just a spin-off of batman. Arrowcar, arrow plane, arrow craft, arrow signal. Billionaire, skilled fighter, instead of the batarang he used arrows. I like ideas that are new a fresh, not the same but with a new twist.
As for Vertias, lionel luthor, and tess Mercier. Once again, green arrow is a different actor then on smallville. Meaning, this is not going to be the story line that it was in smallville. Being that… those were only created for smallville and has nothing to do with the true background of Green Arrow.
Now will this show last. I do think it will last longer than the Aquaman series ( i mean one episode) but it will not last more than 2 seasons if that.

Okay this Green Arrow is not going tobe the same actor/ charactor from smallville, I can lkive with that. However I agree with one of the previous views above ” I don’t understand why there are so many unnecessary changes to the mythology. Why call Dinah by her middle name? Why try to give Ollie’s parents a larger role? ”

    • Craig Byrne June 13, 2012 at 2:59 am - Reply

You’ll see why Oliver’s parents have a larger role; it’s for very good reason. I’m assuming Dinah goes by her middle name to separate herself from the original Dinah Lance who was the first Black Canary.

  29. CanonPro June 8, 2012 at 5:09 am - Reply

If u watch the extended trailer, u see 2 things. 1- a hooded figure in a red mask, and 2- a half-black, half-orange mask impaled on an arrow… This means 2 things. Deathstroke will be making an appearance, possibly regularly, and we may just have a visit from… THE RED HOOD?

Who plays green arrow in the series and when does d dvd hits the market and what happens to olivers apprentice mia from smallville.
